Mark Wakeham: Campaigning on the climate emergency – some thoughts

    markwakeham-scrndmp700

Mark Wakeham is the CEO for Environment Victoria, one of Australia’s leading environment non-government organisations. He talks about how the message that there isn’t a carbon budget left in his view is best communicated by climate action campaigners – drawing a parallel to the anti-nuclear movements’ refraining from using the mushroom-cloud in their campaigning because it they thought it would put people off. Should we or shouldn’t we be showing the mushroom-cloud of the ‘climate mind bomb’?

Other questions discussed at the workshop

    What is climate emergency campaigning?
    · Is it reinforcing and building accurate description of the climate science within all climate campaigns?
    · Is it campaigning for the declaration of a climate emergency?
    · Is it campaigning for a massive emergency-speed mobilisation?
    · Is it all of the above?
    · Is it something else? Something additional to the above?

Does your group do climate emergency campaigning? Which type? If not why not? If so how is it going? Could you do more or it?

  • Climate Change Act and Climate Charter Briefing

Environmental Justice Australia has organised a briefing. Come along for an expert legal briefing on the review of the Victorian Climate Change Act and Victorian People’s Climate Charter.

The Victorian Government is going to propose a new Climate Change Act in the next couple of months. We currently have a unique window of opportunity to act to ensure that Victoria implements a Climate Change Act that achieves real emissions reductions and is well-equipped to deal with future challenges posed by Climate Change.

A key part of the Act needs to be the Victorian People’s Climate Charter. Inspired by the example of Victoria’s Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities, an independent panel of legal and policy experts has recommended including a Climate Charter in the Victorian Climate Change Act.

The Climate Charter would guide all government planning, policy and decision making in responding to climate change, whether reducing our emissions and transitioning to clean energy sources, or dealing with the impacts of climate change that are already being felt by the community.

    You’ll learn:

    • What a Climate Charter is and how it would operate in practice
    • Why the Climate Charter gives us a powerful new tool for addressing federal government inaction on the climate change
    • What other key pillars are needed to make sure Victoria has an effective Climate Change Act that drives meaningful emissions reduction.
    • The crucial next steps we need to take to ensure that an ambitious, nation leading Climate Change Act is adopted by the Victorian government

You’ll also have the opportunity to have your questions answered by experienced environmental lawyers Felicity Millner and Brendan Sydes.
